Sow bugs inhabit moist, decaying layers of tree bark in forests and wooded areas. They are therefore found under loose bark, within rotting logs, or in the leaf litter found at the base of trees. Sow bugs require moisture and a damp environment to maintain their bodily functions. Their hard exoskeletons provides defense against predators and physical damage, while also helping to reduce water loss. They undergo molting, a process in which they shed their exoskeletons in order to grow.

Micro Climate

Sow bugs thrive in moderate climates, generally preferring temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to feed and avoiding desiccation and predation during the day. Sow bugs often aggregate in groups within their habitats, which helps maintain moisture levels within their immediate environment and provides collective protection.

Material

Tree bark, especially on decaying or fallen trees, retains moisture and is therefore very attractive to sow bugs. The decaying wood supplies a steady source of organic matter that sow bugs can feed on. The layers of tree bark offer protection from predators as well as sunlight, wind, and fluctuating temperatures.

Location

The Prater in Vienna is a rich natural habitat that supports a diverse range of wildlife. Its dense woodlands, meandering trails, and waterways create ideal conditions for various species. The Prater spans an area of about 1,200 hectares and is home to over 2,500 trees. The forest's abundant vegetation offers food and shelter to many species, while the varied microhabitats foster ecological diversity. Situated near the Danube River, the Prater forest plays a crucial role in maintaining the region's sustainability and environmental balance.

Construction

Sow bugs have specialized mouth parts called mandibles, which can break down tough plant material and are adapted to shred the bark layer. By using their legs to push aside organic matter, they create small burrows and find sheltered spots where humidity levels are higher. While burrowing, sow bugs use a combination of leg movements and body flexing to maneuver and navigate.
